OPUS 24
24 soundportraits from
100 FEMALE VOICES - portraits of renowned female artists
from 100 years of the Salzburg Festival

With Opus 20, Martina Stock presents the continuation
of her walk-in audiovisual installation 100 FEMALE VOICES,
last exhibited during the summer of 2021 in the Kollegienkirche.

The audiovisual project Opus 24 highlights female cultural history
in sound and image. Martina Stock unveils an artistic genealogy of women
from the Festival history’s past from the fields of opera, acting, dance,
stage design, directing, composition and literature.

The interdisciplinary project serves the promotion of gender equality.
By means of portraits of outstanding female artists and a musical interpretation,
it creates a history that did not previously exist in this form.

„Marina Stock, whose main media are the harp, refined with electronic elements, beats
and sound surfaces, as well as silkscreen-paintings, conveys stories by means of
selected personalities dissolved into individual highlights of a particular performance,
role and presentation“.

These are selected personalities who encompass the entirety of female artistic creation,
representing Austrian cultural heritage and yet transcending nationality.
Visitors are guided through the exhibition on a multimedia level that unfolds in various
layers and loops, string sounds and the painterly layering of grids,
surfaces and dots.

Martina Stock, who paints with squeegee and screen, creates a rich web
of relationships that oscillates between past and present, bringing space
and time together in a multi-sensory manner. The works, positioned back to back,
combine the photographic image with abstract fiction, conveying a strong
alliance of women.

This project, conceived as a total work of art, does not seek to define a feminine
aesthetic, but instead creates a multi-faceted narrative with numerous fractures
and tensions employing portraits to map, reflect, and revise time and ages.
Relating stories from a different perspective also means posing questions.
to ask questions.

How, for instance, does a gender-specific chronology relate to the cultural
dominant chronology, which was highly influenced by male protagonists?

Should a history that focuses on female art-making define itself
by deviating from an established narrative?

What is the lasting impact of both emancipatory
movements and strategies of self-assertion in women‘s art?

What can we learn from history?

Do we need to correct and change it in retrospect?

Opus 20 by Martina Stock is the continuation of an homage to female
artistic art-making and immerses women artists “in a golden light that elevates
itself in many reflections to an apotheosis that transcends time.“
