ART 100 FEMALE VOICES
OPUS 20 | TEXT BY ANGELA STIEF, DIRECTOR OF ALBERTINA MODERN, VIENNA
Within the framework of a presentation of 20 sound portraits of significant female
artists from the history of the Salzburg Festival, the artist Martina Stock presents
a performance with harp and paintings.
With Opus 20, artist Martina Stock presents for the first time the continuation of
her walk-in audiovisual installation 100 FEMALE VOICES, last exhibited during the
summer of 2021 in the Kollegienkirche.
The audiovisual project Opus 20 highlights female cultural history in sound and image.
Stock unveils an artistic genealogy of women from the Festival history’s past from the
fields of opera, acting, dance, stage design, directing, composition and literature.
The interdisciplinary project serves the promotion of gender equality.
By means of portraits of outstanding female artists and a musical interpretation,
it creates a history that did not previously exist in this form.
"Marina Stock, whose main media are the acoustic harp, refined with electronic elements,
beats and sound surfaces, as well as paintings, conveys stories by means of selected
personalities dissolved into individual highlights of a particular performance, role and presentation“.
These are selected personalities who encompass the entirety of female artistic creation,
representing Austrian cultural heritage and yet transcending nationality.
Visitors are guided through the exhibition on a multimedia level that unfolds in various layers and loops,
string sounds and the painterly layering of grids, surfaces and dots.
Martina Stock, who paints with squeegee and screen, creates a rich web of relationships
that oscillates between past and present, bringing space and time together in a multi-sensory manner.
The works, positioned back to back, combine the photographic image with abstract fiction,
conveying a strong alliance of women. This project, conceived as a total work of art, does
not seek to define a feminine aesthetic, but instead creates a multi-faceted narrative with
numerous fractures and tensions employing portraits to map, reflect, and revise time and ages.
Relating stories from a different perspective also means posing questions. to ask questions.
How, for instance, does a gender-specific chronology relate to the cultural dominant chronology,
which was highly influenced by male protagonists?
Should a history that focuses on female art-making define itself by deviating from an established narrative?
What is the lasting impact of both emancipatory movements and strategies of self-assertion in women's art?
What can we learn from history? Do we need to correct and change it in retrospect?
Opus 20 by Martina Stock is the continuation of an homage to female artistic art-making
and immerses women artists “in a golden light that elevates itself in many reflections to
an apotheosis that transcends time."

SCHLOSS ARENBERG – International Center for Sciences and Arts
For centuries, tradition has been combined with innovation at Schloss Arenberg. The Schloss is home to the Salzburg Stiftung der American Austrian Foundation, gemeinnützige Privatstiftung, and is located in the midst of a gorgeous park in which contemporary sculptures from the Würth Collection are exhibited. Dating back to the 15th century, Schloss Arenberg is named after Princess Sophie from Arenberg, who bought the property in 1861 and gave it the Biedermeier style that it has today. From 1912 to 1922, Hermann Bahr, an Austrian writer and philosopher, and his wife Anna Bahr-Mildenburg, a singer, lived at Schloss Arenberg, making it a meeting place for artists and intellectuals. Stefan Zweig and Max Reinhardt were among their closest friends, and their discussions had a large intellectual influence on the development of the Salzburg Festival. Hermann Bahr's friendship with Gustav Klimt and his speeches in defense of the Vienna Secession had a significant impact on public opinion and the acceptance of this new art movement. The controversial work “Nuda Veritas” was purchased by Bahr and hung in his study at Schloss Arenberg. After several changes of ownership, Schloss Arenberg became the location of the Max Reinhardt Research Center from 1966 to 1995. During the festival season, highly acclaimed exhibitions on theater-related topics were regularly held. At the turn of the millennium, the Salzburg Stiftung der AAF acquired Schloss Arenberg and the surrounding park and made it the home of the Open Medical Institute, an educational initiative for doctors from all over the world. The special ambience of Schloss Arenberg offers an ideal setting for various art and culture projects to be held, including weekly chamber music concerts with musicians from the Mozarteum, changing art exhibitions within the historic premises, and opera camps for children and teenagers, which take place during the summer months by the Vienna Philharmonic in cooperation with the Salzburg Festival. The park adjacent to Schloss Arenberg, which is open to the public and includes the Würth Sculpture Garden, offers a stimulating encounter with contemporary art.
